On this day 226 years ago on November 21, 1789 North Carolina became the 12th colony to ratify the US Constitution and therefore became the 12th State in the Union. North Carolina currently has a population of 9.9 million (9th in the Nation) and is the 28th largeststate (53,819 sq mi or 139,390 km sq). The capital city of North Carolina is Raleigh and it's largest city is Charlotte, which is also the second largest city in the Southeastern States. North Carolina consists of exactly 100 counties and stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Appalachian Mountains, bordering Virginia to the north, Tennessee to the west, Georgia to the Southwest, and South Carolina to the south. North Carolina also contains the highest mountain in Eastern North America, Mt. Mitchell and is well known for it's dangerous coastline that has sunken many ships known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic.
